In the late 19th century, alloys of lead and tin were those most commonly used to make foil. In the 20th century, aluminum would eventually emerge as the preferred metal foil for a variety of uses. The earliest production of aluminum foil was in France in about 1903, by Gautschi, which employed the pack rolling method to reduce aluminum to foil thickness. Thin sheets of aluminum were stacked and rolled between heavy iron cylinders heated internally with hot water.
