摘要

Gillies, Gillies and Weinberg1 add to the evidence that patients recall little of what they are told preoperatively about the risks of anaesthesia. The consent process in the study appears to have been informed by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists professional document on consent2, which recommends we tell our patients about risks that are common and minor, as well as those that are rare but serious, and which draws considerably upon the judgement in Rogers vs Whitaker3. In this High Court case, the patient, who was blind in her operative eye, had made clear to the ophthalmic surgeon preoperatively of her great concern about risks to her non-operative, 'good' eye.
