摘要

The approaching retirement of the baby-boom generation carries widespread implications for all of society. But while America works out exactly how to pay and care for what will certainly be the biggest wave of new pensioners in history, the metals industries are trying to figure out how they will continue to run their businesses after the baby boomers retire. The steel industry faces a mass exodus of talent over the next five to 15 years, and succession planning is a little behind schedule. Steel, like other metals industries, has been busy funding scholarships, establishing internships and building dialog and relationships with local community and educational/vocational schools and universities to try to attract young talent. But with one major U.S. flat-rolled producer reporting that between 30 and 50 percent of its work force will be eligible for retirement in the next five years, it might already be too late.
