Copper scrap imports rise as aluminum falls

China’saluminum scrap imports fell in May and are set to drop further in coming months due to falling downstream demand and power shortages, but copper scrap imports hit the highest monthly volume so far this year. Aluminum scrap arrivals totaled 220,000 tonnes last month, according to preliminary Chinese Customs data, down 5.6 percent from April’s 2011 peak and 4.5 percent lower than in May last year.
