Effective Systems of Scrap Utilization: Copper,Aluminum,and Nickel.

The study examines the supply relationships for nonferrous scrap and secondary metal. The analysis concentrates upon the response of supply to price changes,but the relationship of supply to other economic and technical variables is also examined. The basic hypothesis is that in the United States the supply of nonferrous metal recovered from scrap responds to changes in price and other economic stimuli. In the first part of the analysis,economic and technical factors underlying the supply of nonferrous scrap and secondary metal are examined in general,and a conceptual model of supply is developed. In the second part of the analysis,quantitative analysis is applied to three specific scrap metals to examine and measure relationships discussed in the a priori economic analysis. The three metals-copper,aluminum,and nickel -furnish a reasonable cross section of conditions in the secondary metal market. (Author)
