They don't like to be called "transplants" anymore. The large number of foreign automakers who have located, for the most part, in the southeastern United States prefer the term "new domestics," a reflection of their long-term commitment to making a home in the U.S. market. The term "new domestics" also might apply to steel producers who are locating operations in the Southeast in an attempt to penetrate that market, although many who currently-and will in the future-supply steel to the new automakers are not new at all. Foreign steel producers, including Russia's OAO Sever-stal and OAO Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) and Germany's ThyssenKrupp AG, already are lining up to supply steel to the new domestic automakers. It also can be argued that India's Essar Global Ltd., with the recent purchases of Algoma Steel Inc., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the assets of Minnesota Steel Industries LLC, Nashwauk, Minn., wants to get in the game. At the same time, longtime U.S. steelmakers U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, Nucor Corp., Charlotte, N.C., and AK Steel Corp., West Chester, Ohio, among others, already are providing steel to the new domestics and have no plans to give up market share to their newer competitors.
