More than 1,400 school and public libraries and bookstores participated in the fourth annual Teen Read Week October 14-20. The theme of the yearly observance, sponsored by YALSA, is "Read for the Fun of It," and this year the event carried a subtheme of "Make Reading a Hobbit" in celebration of the popularity of fantasy literature with teens by such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien. Library activities around the country included: * A Parent/Son Book Discussion on Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Random House) by James Bradley, Ron Powers, and Michael French was held at East Lansing (Mich.) Public Library, with a local veteran of Iwo Jima as the special guest.
