SHORTHORN genetics have played a significant role in the development of the Australian beef cattle industry with the first registered Shorthorns being imported to this country in 1825. The Shorthorn bloodlines have been the base for some of the famousAustralian beef cattle herds for companies such as the North Australian Pastoral Company founded in 1877.Richard Ham, president of Shorthorn Beef Australia, said today's Shorthorns were increasingly in demand by feedlots and processors. This reflects the modern Shorthorn's successful combination of on-the-hoof and carcase traits that make it an attractive breed for the feedlot sector.
