BSE guidelines settled as strong dollar acts up

Twelve months ago I referred to lot feeders having become accustomed to volatility in our operating models — turbulent swings in commodity, financial and currency markets. At the time of writing in November last year, the Australian dollar had declined 30% against the US currency since that August, providing a degree of optimism for an export-ravaged lot feeding sector. What a turnaround since March this year - the Australian dollar has appreciated 48% against the US greenback, 30% against the Japanese yen, 24% against the euro, 16% on the Indonesian rupiah and 8% against the Korean won. This appreciation in our currency has has a significant impact on our exporters' ability to be competitive in overseas markets and increased supply pressure on our local beef market.
