UNTIL ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO, I had never heard of Kokopelli (The Flute Player). Now, he's a household name. Pictured on everything from coffee mugs to baseball hats to oven mitts to table lamps. You'd recognize him if you saw him—a stick figure hunchedover his flute. He's not really hunched—the hump represents a bag of seeds that he carries, ala Johnny Appleseed, to populate the barren country with fruits, vegetables and soybeans—the soybeans make a refreshing breakfast drink, or fuel for your car, depending on your immediate needs.
