Mass seed production technology for the Kuruma prawn Marsupenaeus japonic us was established in 1964, and was immediately put into practice for the aquaculture and stock enhancement of this species. It is now considered a pioneering development in aquaculture. Over the past five decades, the technology has become more sophisticated owing to the considerable research performed by public enterprises. The Ecosystem Culture Method of this technology is a characteristic method for rearing larvae. From the economic and ecological perspectives, the concept of this method is very important, and has wider applicability for the mass seed production of other species.
