摘要

Stories are how people make sense of situations, objects, information or relationships. Story-telling (or narratives) draws us into a conversation, or a space where our stories, situations, experiences or perspectives can be shared. Narrative inquiry as a research method is relatively new in nursing and midwifery terms, but it has a long and varied history across other disciplines including psychology, anthropology and sociology. However, this by no means implies that there is a unified or standardised approach to studying and analysing narratives (Atkinson and Delamont, 2006). Definitions differ with varying degrees of emphasis on the role, function and context of stories; making narrative inquiry less than straight forward for nursing and midwifery researchers to adopt as a mainstream research method.
