Intraoperative radiotherapy and limb-sparing surgery in the treatment of primary, non-metastatic extremity soft tissue sarcoma

Objective The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy and toxicity of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) and limb-sparing surgery for patients with primary, non-metastatic extremity soft tissue sarcoma (ESTS). Methods Sixty-six consecutively treated patients at our institution were identified. Additional external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) was delivered to 67 % patients, while 61 % underwent perioperative chemotherapy. Median IORT and EBRT doses were 12.5 and 60 Gy, respectively. Close or positive margins were found in the majority patients (59 %), and most tumors were high grade (88 %), deep in location (79 %), and of advanced American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage (88 %).
