From Sports Ethics to Labor Relations

Professional sports medicine is a morally conflicted mass of competing interests, as Testoni and colleagues (2013) make clear in their article. The authors have done the academic and practice communities a great service in providing a detailed and wide-ranging description of the many and varied conflicts of interests that bedevil the role of the contemporary sports physician. The elucidation of these conflicts, most notably those between team interests and players' interests and between players' immediate wishes and their long-term health, should serve as the basis for a wideranging discussion of the ethical norms that ought to prevail in the treatment and care of elite professional athletes.
