Angolan Kwanza rigs added as Statoil drills for giant

The frenzy of drilling in the pre-salt of the Kwanza Basin off Angola has increased with even more wells now being drilled and Statoil targeting a multi-billion barrel prospect. What used to be a solitary drilling campaign for Cobalt International was joined earlier this year by Eni in Block 35 using the Ocean Rig Poseidon and Total with a four well programme in Blocks 25 and 40 using the Ocean Rig Skyros. The Ocean Rig Athena has now arrived off Angola for Cono-coPhillips where it will be drilling two wells each on Blocks 36 and 37 while the Rowan Renaissance is expected to spud any day now for Repsol in Block 22.
