Statoil ditches Angola rig after subsalt duds

London-Norway’s Statoil has decided to cancel a three-year rig contract to drill off- shore Angola after its hunt for oil or gas in the Kwanza subsalt basin failed to live up to expectations. Statoil said it has terminated a deal for the Stena Carron rig two years earlier than agreed after the two contract wells in blocks 38 and 39 were “disappointing”.
