Multicriteria evaluation (MCE) methodology was applied in this study for investigating the potential expansion of shellfish farming in the Bay of Souahlia and for identifying the best sites for developing this activity. Methodology was based on the data collection from fieldwork and empirical model use. To implement a MCE approach, a set of criteria have been selected such as optimal growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis, hydrodynamics, and distance to the harbor. Bathymetry, sediment type, and the presence of Posidonia oceanica were the constraints taken into consideration. In terms of suitability, the results showed differences between the stations S2, S4, S7, S10, and S12. The differences resulted from environmental conditions like chlorophyll a and hydrodynamics variability. We concluded that the Bay of Souahlia considering the environmental, socioeconomic, and logistical conditions provides a high potential for the development of shellfish aquaculture.
