Preeclampsia, a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high BP and proteinuria, affects 8% of all pregnancies. Often not diagnosed until late pregnancy, it is the cause of 76 000 maternal and 500 000 infant deaths per year.12 Absence of a robust, early biomarker of preeclampsia that directs mechanistic research and treatment for the disorder represents a fundamental gap in knowledge and clinical practice.
