I always make room for winter squash in my garden so that we have a good supply of the long-storing fruits for winter soups, roasting, risotto and pies. This North American native is quite easy to grow; it needs little fussing for most of the growingseason. The fruits are ready to pick in early to mid-autumn. Once harvested and cured, a properlystored winter squash can last for six to nine months.
