Dr. Aidan O'Donoghue, Pipeline Research Limited, UK, illustrates how to determine pig dynamics through modelling. Pigging in gas pipelines can result in unsteady velocity or motion due to the compressibility of the gas and variations in pig friction with the pipe wall. Local accelerations and decelerations are known as 'velocity excursions' and such events can cause out-of-specification velocities for inspection tools, dangerous loads on bends, possible pig damage or difficult receipt conditions. Combined with changes in product flowrates, the velocity of the pig can change continuously as the pig negotiates the pipeline, making prediction of the arrival time difficult and overall control of the pigging operation less than optimal.
