Charging unit for melting of pigs, especially Mg pigs, with at least one melt tank, a tank cover with an opening for introduction of pigs and a conveyor for conveying the metal pig to the opening. A charging shaft is located in the opening the lower end of which dips into the filled tank. The chrging unit is fitted with a melt suction drawing off device. An independent claim is included for melting of pigs in a charging unit as referred to above.
