Germany:On the Trail of Food Counterfeiters

In a recent counterfeiting workshop, the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) demonstrated how fraudsters can outsmart consumers.Whether it's shrimp sprayed with water, spices stretched with olive tree leaves, or organic eggs from conventionally kept chicken, food fraud can strike anyone. The counterfeiters focus on both high-quality, expensive high-margin food and low-cost food,where profits are made over the quantity. The BVL showed at its stand at the International Green Week event, from 19 to 28 January 2018, how fraudsters are fooling consumers. It also provided information about the work of the authorities in their fight against food fraudsters.
