My love affair with the Mk 2 Golf started when, as a young and naive trainee Architectural Technician, I had a ride in a colleague's car. At the time I wanted a Peugeot 306, but after a few trips in that Golf 1.6 Driver I fell for its simple elegant design and that satisfying clunk when you shut the door. I had to have one, and so my savings fund for a 306 became the Mk 2 saving fund.
