Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomiopathy associated to mitral valve dysplasia in the Dalmatian dog: Two cases

Ventricular hypertrophy in dogs is usually secondary to aortic and/or pulmonary stenosis; dogs rarely develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) as a primary form (Sisson et al., 2000). In 1998,11 cases of obstructive HCM associated with mitral dysplasia were described for Dalmatian dogs. In the absence of signs of fixed aortic stenosis, the authors suggested that the cardiomyopathy was congenital (D'Agnolo et al., 1998). Two further cases, observed in the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Messina, are reported here.
