The past century has been characterized by dramatic improvements in the steel industry which have profoundly affected our society as a whole, especially since the 1950s. Steel is and will remain the basis for future industrial development and progress. With the accelerated introduction of new technologies in the metallurgical industry, it is obvious that the resulting impact on society will be accelerated as well. An evaluation of the driving forces behind such technological developments is therefore necessary in order to acquire a full understanding of where the industry is heading and which steps are necessary in order to maximize progress and the benefits for engineering/technology companies, producers and consumers. Current trends in the steel industry today point to the eventual introduction and adoption of continuous steelmaking, strip casting and, in the long-term perspective, hydrogen metallurgy. In the metallurgical sector these new technologies will offer the greatest potential for progress and advancement.
