Groundwork for a Transpersonal Psychoanalysis: Spirituality, Relationship, and Participation

Robin S. Brown is interested in the interface between relational psychoanalysis and transpersonal and Jungian theory. His work is a reminder that the gap between these different clinical approaches is very small indeed. Just as analytical psychology has absorbed many concerns that first emerged within psychoanalysis, so psychoanalysis has gradually integrated many interests previously associated with Jungian theory. Brown seeks to demonstrate that further cross-fertilization between their respective theories would greatly enhance clinical practice. His first book, Psychoanalysis Beyond the End of Metaphysics: Thinking Towards the Post-Relational, argues that the predominantly secular emphasis of relational psychoanalysis may be impairing treatment. Its publication was almost immediately followed by his well-received edited volume, Re-Encountering Jung: Analytical Psychology and Contemporary Psychoanalysis, in which psychoanalysts of various persuasions including relational psychologists, Kleinians, and Lacanians engage with various aspects of Jungian theory, while senior Jungian figures respond to different aspects of contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice.
