Tactical UAVs are now considered indispensable for modern militaries, predominantly carrying out ISR roles and acting as ground force support. However, their capabilities have been under scrutiny recently, with vulnerabilities to missile defence systems exposed, while high costs continue to cause concern. Tasked with loitering at high altitude and collecting ISR data, penetrating contested airspace or, at a lower level, acting as personal reconnaissance devices for ground-based soldiers, tactical UAVs of all descriptions have become essential pieces of kit for defence operators.
