Lyme disease, a vector-borne bacterial infection, is a growing burden in the United States. It is spread by the black-legged tick that thrives living on the white-footed mouse and deer. If left untreated, Lyme disease can develop to late manifestations, affecting the joints, nervous system, or the heart. Pharmacists and healthcare professionals have a major role to play in raising awareness of Lyme disease, particularly in areas where it is less cocnmon. To that end, an updated Lyme-disease guideline has been drafted by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American College of Rheumatology. Pharmacists and their teams can recognize the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease and provide advice on prevention and management.
