Grow recommended varieties of rabi fodder crops

The total area under rabi fodders is 3.60 lakh hectares in the state. During the rabi season, berseem is the major fodder crop followed by oats. Berseem alone occupies 2.31 lakh hectares as it gives a highly nutritious and palatable fodder in repeatedcuttings from November to mid-June. Nowadays, ryegrass is also grown by the dairyfarmers. Ryegrass is a multi-cut, highly nutritious, palatable and easily digestible non-legume fodder, which gives five to six cuttings in rabi season. Green fodder plays a major role in the feed of milch animals, which ultimately affects the health ofthese animals and also provides required nutrients for better milk production. Though a-berseem is adequate for milch animals yielding up to 6-7 litres of milk daily, yet efforts should be made to feed a mixture of legume and non-legume fodders such as berseem with oats or berseem with ryegrass.
