Corrosion in saltwater main cooling systems on power stations has long been a significant problem with unacceptably high maintenance costs. Many different piping systems and protective measures have been tried without long term success. With power producers now demanding significant long term guarantees for station availability and low maintenance cost the constructors have turned to new materials to meet their clients requirements. Composites, broadly known as FRP - Fibre Reinforced Plastic or GRP - Glass Reinforced Plastic, provide a viable solution to the problem. The properties of Composites include high corrosion resistance, durability, lightweight and overall design life cost effectiveness.
