EU approves GM MIR604 maize imports

The European Commission has approved Syngenta's genetically modified corn rootworm-resistant MIR604 maize for import, processing and use in food and feed. The Commission acted quickly to clear MIR604 after EU Ministers failed to agree on whether to accept or reject its earlier proposal to approve the crop (Agrow No 581, p 10). It was under pressure from the European feed industry, which has been facing supply difficulties. Some US soybean imports have been blocked because they contained traces of non-EU-approved GM maize lines. The authorisation is valid for ten years.
