INTERNAL CORROSION discovered at the low drain points of degasser and separator vessels, offshore Qatar, should have meant shutdown of the platform and replacement, at significant cost. Using advanced composites' repair technology, however, a permanent solution was installed whilst the facility remained on-line and at full production capacity. The cost of a platform shutdown can run into millions pound per day in terms of lost production alone. In this case, when ultrasonic testing revealed corrosion in the 2-in drain lines, caused by waste liquids being collected at the bottom of the degasser vessel and processes through, shutdown would usually have been the only option. However, the FD Alliance was called in to engineer an online solution using the latest in advanced composites materials.
