Iraq’s new government has agreed with foreign oil frms on output cuts at the key felds they operate in Basrah province, as it looks to comply with the Opec+ deal. But the compensation this may incur could create a long-term fnancial burden. Under the Opec+ agreement, Iraq has to reduce crude output by 1.06mn b/d in May-June from an October 2018 baseline of 4.65mn b/d. To help it do so, state- owned Basrah Oil (BOC) has asked ExxonMobil to cut 50,000 b/d at the 490,000 b/d West Qurna 1 feld and Russia’s Lukoil to cut 70,000 b/d at the 400,000 b/d West Qurna 2. A combined 180,000 b/d of cuts will come from the 1.5mn b/d Rumaila and 500,000 b/d Zubair felds, which BP and Italy’s Eni operate, respectively.
