UN targets North Korea's oil product imports

The UN Security Council has agreed measures to cut North Korea's oil product imports by more than half, freeze crude imports and impose a ban on shipments of natural gas liquids (NGLs) to the country. The tougher sanctions cap North Korea's imports of gasoline, diesel and other refined products at 5,500 b/d, starting in October. The measures will reduce North Korean product imports by 55pc, the US State Department says. The resolution also freezes crude exports to North Korea at current levels of 11,000 b/d by banning all countries from raising crude supplies above the average for the past 12 months. And it bans supplies of all NGLs and condensates, in an attempt to prevent North Korea from obtaining substitutes for products, the UN says.
