Pecans are one of the most desired tree nuts in the United States. The demand for the nut and its production has been increasing every year. In comparison to 2016, pecan production in the U.S. increased by 8.5 percent in 2017, which resulted in approximately 300 million pounds of pecans. In the past few years, various tree nuts have been frequently associated with several outbreaks and/or recalls due to contamination with bacteria of public health concern (Zhang et al., 2017). However, pecans have aclean safety record. There have been no outbreaks associated with the nut and its products as of yet, but there have been several recalls due to potential salmonella contamination.
