A worrying number of fork lift truck incidents result in injury or death to LGV drivers. Research carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) over a four-year period showed 49 incidents involved visiting lorry drivers, with 78% of visiting drivers being struck by moving lift trucks during loading and unloading, and 16% struck by falling loads. Gavin Hutchinson, auditor and examiner from RTITB, explains some of the causes of these incidents, and how employers can help prevent them. There are many factors that can contribute to incidents which involve visiting LGV drivers and fork lift trucks. For example, there may not be a standard operating procedure in place, and even when there is, a lack of sufficient supervision and management of the delivery operation means that procedures may not be complied with. Poor working conditions, equipment issues and a lack of the correct signage can also play a part.
