Spironolactone has anti-androgenic properties, yet is widely used to control hypertension and congestive heart failure. Authors describe effect of the antioxidant L-carnitine on spermatogenesis, sperm and seminiferous tubules in groups of 5 NMRI miceeach given spironolactone or not. Mice were injected intraperitoneally (IP) phosphate buffered saline as drug solvent (controls), or spironolactone 50 mg/kg IP, L- carnitine 100 mg/kg IP or spironolactone 50 mg/kg with L- carnitine 100 mg/kg IP daily for 15 days. Body and testis weights, spermatocytes, spermatid, sperm counts and diameter of seminiferous tubules values in mice given spironolactone decreased compared with controls (P ≤0.05). In mice given L-carnitine with spironolactone, testis weight,spermatogonia, spermatids, sperm and seminiferous tubule diameter, increased compared with those given spironolactone ( P ≤0.05).
