Unlike most trees that produce new seeds from new buds each year, the pine nut tree has a three-year cycle.That's reflected in the three stages of pine nuts, the fully formed green cones that will ripen to brown and form this year's crop, the two-year-old smaller brown cones are next year's crop and then the new infant ones will be the crop in 2020.
