The American Cancer Society publication, Cancer Facts and Figures 2018, estimated that in 2016, there were more than 15.5 million Americans with a history of cancer. U.S. estimates for 2018 include 1.7 million new cases of cancer and 609 640 cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, the overall age-adjusted death rate peaked in 1991 at 215 cancer deaths per 100 000 people and has since declined by 26% to 159 per 100 000 people, as of 2015. This translates to more than 2.3 million fewer cancer deaths between 1991 and 2015, a decline that has been attributed to reductions in the number of people who smoke and improvements in early detection and treatment.
