Agreement to Strengthen WTO Rules on Subsidies

The Aluminum Association, European Aluminium, and the Japan Aluminium Association released a joint statement on January 14th, applauding the agreement between the U.S, EU, and Japan to strengthen existing World Trade Organization's (WTO) rules on industrial subsidies. Trade ministers from the three regions stated their shared belief that the current WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (ASCM) needs to be updated to better address the "market and trade distorting subsidization existing in certain jurisdictions." Furthermore, the ministers recognize the need for a deep reform of the WTO, including a reversal of the burden of proof for particularly harmful types of subsidies.
