Objective: To study the clinical features and pathogenic characteristics of tinea capitis in Nanchang area. Methods: All patients diagnosed with tinea capitis on their first visit were enrolled in this study from July 2013 to June 2014. In addition to obtaining questionnaires, fungal direct microscopy and cultures were also performed. The Strains of pathogens were identified morphologically. Results: A total of 118 cases of tinea capitis, aged 9 months to 74 years with mean of 13.9±18.6 years, were recruited. 16 of the 118 cases were older than 15 years old. The majority of the patients were black dot ringworm (79, 68.1%), followed by kerion(34, 29.3%) and tinea alba(3, 2.6%). Among the total of 108 strains isolated from patients, 68 strains(63.0%) were Trichophyton violaceum; 18(16.7%) were Trichophyton mentagrophytes; Trichophyton tonsurans accounted for 6.5%(7); Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis, and Microsporum gypseum accounted for 5.6%(6), 4.6%(5), and 3.7%(4), respectively. Conclusions: Black dot ringworm caused by Trichophyton violaceum is dominant in Nanchang area while 64% of kerion are caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
