Transference and the analytic relationship Current perspectives

In this article I will explain the different meanings and functions that come to transference and the analytic relationship in the therapeutic process. In doing so, I distinguish between transference and countertransference on the one hand and the analytic relationship on the other, where both areas are continually interwoven in the analytic process, and I focus on the different roles that both occupy in the therapeutic process. My goal is a model in which the work with transference has two functions: to interpret the transference and to foster the development of the analytic relationship, which I understand as the place where feelings undergo transformation. As a new construction, the analytic relationship is built up from the meeting of the receptive parts of both the analysand and the analyst. The analytic function of the analyst supports and sustains the analytic relationship. When this function fails and the analyst gives distorted or disconnected interpretations over an extended period of time, a hopeless situation ensues which destroys and presumably stops the analytic process.
