William D. Manly honored for lifetime achievement

ASM honored William D. Manly, FASM, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, for "being a leader of the society, a champion of the materials profession and a mentor to a generation of engineers." "Throughout his career, he has brought honor to our society and our profession," said Dr. Donald R. Muzyka, FASM, ASM president, during a presentation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). "It's a pleasure for me to announce that Jan. 13, 2003, has been proclaimed by the ASM Board of Trustees as 'Bill Manly Day.'" Manly's involvement as a champion of the International Program for Alloy Phase Diagrams was cited as one of his most significant ASM-related achievements. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Manly began his business career as a metallurgist at ORNL, Nuclear Division, Union Carbide Corp., Oak Ride, Tenn. He served in a number of capacities, including director of the Gas-Cooled Reactor Program.
