Analysis of the different systems used to establish correct hoof balance: a review

'Foot balance' is the term used to describe the way that a foot is assessed and managed through trimming and shoeing. The three planes of foot balance are mediolateral (M/L), anterior-posterior (A/P) and solear symmetry (S/S). Published literature shows how these planes of balance can be assessed (Balch et al 2007; Curtis 1999; Deacon & Williams 1999; van Heel 2004; Turner 2006). A difficulty experienced by researchers is finding a consistent way to establish parameters from which valid and reliable data can be obtained.
