Russian coatings industry gradually shifts to domestic raw materials

The Russian government launched a special decree, in which Russian producers and the foreign-owned facilities will use domestic raw materials beginning 2018. In 2014, the country bought titanium dioxide (Ti02) ranged from 67,000 tonnes/y to 82,000 tonnes/y, mainly from facilities in Germany, China and the US. Russia took over Crimean Titan, which produced 75,000 tonnes of TiO2 in 2016. Crimean Titan intends to invest Roubles 31.2 bn ($500 M) in 2020 to increase its Ti02 capacities to almost 155,000 tonnes/y. The additional capacities of Crimean Titan will just meet around 20% of the demand from the Russian coatings industry. Russian Paints is importing 55 tonnes/mo of TiO2 from Crimean Titan and 62 tonnes/mo from Chemours Titanium Technologies to manufacture industrial coatings and paints, and premium coatings, respectively. Meanwhile, Gazprom launched an acrylic acid and butyl acrylate factory in the Republic of Bashkiria in early Dec 2017. The company spent Roubles 40 bn ($650 M) for the Acryl Salavat plant, which will produce 35,000 tonnes/y of ice acrylic acid, 80,000 tonnes/y of butyl acrylate and 80,000 tonnes/y of acrylic acid.
