Insulin resistance and anti-hepatitis C virus therapy

Among the various extrahepatic manifestations of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common diseases associated with chronic HCV. There are strong lines of evidence supporting an epidemiologic link between DM and chronic hepatitis C (CHC). The higher prevalence of DM in CHC patients is observed all over the world. In Taiwan, large-scale studies have been reported showing the higher accumulated risk for DM in individuals with positive anti-HCV and the important role of HCV viremia, but not anti-HCV seropos-itivity alone, on the increased association with DM.
