A few months ago a former classmate called to excitedly inform me that she had agreed to travel almost 2,000 miles to be the keynote speaker at a university commencement ceremony. Despite the fact that she has been a respected professor for over 30 years, she was somewhat anxious about returning to her alma mater to speak in front of hundreds of graduating students and their proud parents and relatives, university officials, scholarly faculty members and the dignitaries who would share the dais with her.
