Exploration spending by the oil and gas industry's biggest oil companies has been falling for years, mainly due to a need to cut costs during the oil price downturn. But, as these businesses negotiate the energy transition, there are concerns that the search for more oil will lead to trillions of dollars of wasted investment as tougher government policies to tackle carbon emissions emerge (EIF Jul.10'19).
