US President Donald Trump this week designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard, including its elite Quds Force,as a foreign terrorist organization(FTO)under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.This decision could lead to a renewal of the proxy war in Iraq between the US and Iran that followed the US-led invasion of the country in 2003.Moreover,if the US opts to take the FTO designation literally and conduct direct strikes against Revolutionary Guard targets like those carried out against other FTO designees, such as Islamic State and Al-Qaeda,the possibility of a full-scale conflict between the US and Iran becomes real. The destabilizing impact of such a conflict on Mideast geopolitics and global economics cannot be understated.
