Turkey: Inching Toward a Breaking Point With the US

The Turkish decision to purchase advanced Russian S-400 air defense missiles has put it on a collision course with the US which, as US Vice President Mike Pence warned, puts Turkey's membership in Nato "at risk." The S-400 crisis is but one of several points of friction between Turkey and the US that, when viewed in their aggregate, point to the deterioration of Turkey's relationship with the West. The tipping point may come with the recent US decision not to grant an extension of sanctions waivers allowing the continued purchase of Iranian oil.
